Upland Holistic Development Project (UHDP)
The Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai provinces of northern Thailand are home to marginalized ethnic minorities, including many who have left Myanmar. Originally refugee communities who were displaced by civil strife, many hilltribe members have been in Thailand for generations but are not considered citizens by the government of Thailand. This leaves them extremely vulnerable. Without citizenship, they have few legal rights, like access to education, medical care, or land. Without land, these communities, who depend on farming for survival, grow even more vulnerable. The hilltribe farmers have limited access to permanent, rain-fed fields, leaving them with barren, degraded hillsides to provide for their families. Because the problems of deforestation, poverty, and human rights are interconnected, Plant With Purpose's local partner, Upland Holistic Development Project, has been working alongside hilltribe communities to help them learn sustainable farming techniques while simultaneously helping them advocate for legal status in Thailand.
Activities include training for rural farmers in sustainable techniques such as organic fertilizers, agroforestry, reforestation efforts, soil conservation, family gardens, and rainwater harvesting. Support is also provided for savings-led microfinance groups, and building of church leadership.
